City of Toronto Seeks Public Input on Future Waste Management Strategy

Toronto residents are invited to participate in a critical survey addressing the city's waste management challenges as part of efforts to reach an ambitious zero-waste target. The City of Toronto opened an online survey available until June 29, aiming to gather community input on managing nearly 830,000 tonnes of annual waste, according to city officials.

Residents are also encouraged to attend a public event scheduled for June 10, where they can engage directly with city staff, pose questions, and offer suggestions.

Toronto faces pressing challenges in waste management, heightened by a rapidly growing population and limited landfill capacity in Ontario. Officials warn that without strategic intervention, existing landfill space, including the critical Green Lane Landfill, is projected to reach its maximum capacity by 2035.

"It's essential that we update our long-term waste management strategies now to reflect our changing needs and ensure sustainable solutions," said city spokesperson Jennifer Lee.

In 2023 alone, Toronto managed around 830,000 tonnes of waste, with roughly half, approximately 400,000 tonnes, ending up in landfills despite significant recycling efforts.

The city's current long-term waste management strategy, originally approved in 2016, provided a roadmap for managing waste over the subsequent three to five decades. However, an update was mandated by City Council in June 2023, reflecting the evolving demographics and escalating waste generation.

Among key issues under consideration in upcoming consultations are alternative disposal methods, notably energy-from-waste facilities. Discussions on these options are scheduled for later this year, with the city emphasizing the need for early engagement due to the extensive planning, regulatory, and construction timelines involved, often exceeding a decade.

"We need residents' voices now to shape the future of waste management in Toronto effectively," Lee emphasized.

The city plans to finalize its Waste Strategy Update by the end of 2025, outlining concrete actions scheduled for implementation from 2026 to 2036.

Toronto residents can find the survey and additional information about the public consultation process at the city's official website.
