Ubisoft Toronto 15th Anniversary Open Doors

Ubisoft Toronto will open its doors to the public this weekend in celebration of its 15th anniversary and as part of Doors Open Toronto, offering behind-the-scenes tours, live demonstrations and an inside look at the creation of blockbuster franchises, according to the studio’s Managing Director, Darryl Long.

Ubisoft Toronto, located at 224 Wallace Avenue, will welcome visitors on Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guests can explore the studio’s historic 1922 brick-and-beam building, tour its 12,000-square-foot Performance Capture Studio with 30-foot ceilings, towering scaffolding and massive stunt beams and view live motion-capture demos that bring characters in titles such as Far Cry, Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed to life.

“We’re thrilled to be celebrating our 15th anniversary at Doors Open Toronto and are proud to have been part of the Ontario video game industry’s growth and success,” said Darryl Long. “We’re looking forward to sharing our creative space with the community and can’t wait for them to experience the magic behind our games, brought to life by our talented teams.”

Doors Open Toronto is a free, city-wide event inviting the public to explore more than 150 architecturally and culturally significant sites under this year’s theme, “Play.” Participating venues range from historic theatres and sports clubs to creative studios and community hubs, showcasing Toronto’s diverse urban landscape.

In addition to the studio tours, Ubisoft Toronto Narrative Director Navid Khavari will join a panel discussion at the MaRS Discovery District titled “Ready Player One: A Dive into Toronto’s Video Game Industry.” Khavari and fellow panellists Indigo Doyle (independent game creator of Rollergirl), Bracy Appekumoh (writer and mixed-media artist) and Brendan Lehman (artistic director of the Hand Eye Society) will examine how digital play anchors games in place and culture.

Since opening in 2010 as one of Ontario’s first AAA-video game studios, Ubisoft Toronto’s multidisciplinary teams comprising writers, artists, programmers, sound designers and casting specialists have contributed to some of Ubisoft’s biggest franchises. Over the past decade and a half, the studio has fostered local talent through initiatives such as Ubisoft Toronto NEXT and Develop at Ubisoft, while supporting industry events like Hack the ROM, Interactive Ontario’s Indie Super Boost and the XP Game Summit.

As it marks its 15th year, Ubisoft Toronto said it remains committed to job creation, mentorship and community engagement, and looks forward to continuing to drive innovation in Ontario’s game development sector.
